Corey Hayes, PhD, PharmD
Corey Hayes, PhD, PharmD, a Career Development Awardee and an investigator with HSR’s Center for Mental Healthcare and Outcomes Research (CeMHOR), along with colleagues, has developed a new predictive model for premature discontinuation of buprenorphine, a medication that can help prevent harms related to opioid use disorder, such as overdose and suicide. Using nationwide VA electronic health record (EHR) data, the model accurately predicts which Veterans are likely to prematurely discontinue buprenorphine 72% of the time. The research team will next work with VA’s Program Evaluation and Resource Center to adapt the predictive model into a decision support tool that will let providers know who is at high risk of buprenorphine discontinuation in real-time, with actionable items for providers to mitigate the risk of discontinuation. If successful, the new tool could lower buprenorphine discontinuation and overdose rates among Veterans.
Dr. Hayes is a clinical pharmacist, epidemiologist, and health services researcher with training in advanced methods for working with EHR data, developing computer-based tools, and testing the effectiveness of new interventions. His research focuses primarily on using EHR data and advanced quantitative methods to enhance prevention and treatment of opioid use disorder and increase Veterans’ retention in medication treatment for opioid use disorder, particularly through improved policies related to opioid prescribing and novel technology-based interventions.
