Biostatistics & Epidemiology Special Issue Features VA Panel on Healthcare Datasets

In a foreword for this Special Issue, Carolyn Clancy, MD, VA’s Deputy Under Secretary for Health for Discovery, Education and Affiliate Networks, writes about VA’s electronic health record system and its “critical transition from a largely home-grown system to a widely used commercial product…” that “holds enormous promise for Veterans’ care and is deeply rooted in our mission to provide timely, safe, high-quality healthcare to the men and women who serve this nation. The articles in this supplement not only advance this essential mission, but reflect a collective recognition that data science is essential for both research and healthcare operations.”

The special VA issue of the International Biometrics Society’s Biostatistics and Epidemiology, titled “U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Panel on Statistics and Analytics on Healthcare Datasets: Challenges and Recommended Strategies,” includes 11 papers that resulted from deliberations of an HSR&D-funded panel on Statistics and Analytics on VHA Datasets. The Panel was charged with helping investigators design effective analytic plans by identifying challenges and recommending solutions to common data problems found with VA datasets.
