Description: The VA Information Resource Center (VIReC) is presenting a new three-session miniseries on VA data access for new and established VA data users. Sessions will focus on processes, regulatory requirements, and resources applicable to VA data access for preparatory to research activities, approved research projects, and operations purposes. This first session addresses research data access. Our primary goal is to increase VA researcher awareness and understanding of how to obtain data needed to support research on behalf of Veterans.
Learning Objectives
• Outline types of data access and the various data sources, tools, and provisioning options for research
• Explain the Common Rule, the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) Privacy Rule, and requirements VA data access for research
• Provide a brief overview of where to find information about data on the VHA Data Portal, the Data Access Request Tracker (DART) application, and non-DART research data access request processes
Discussants: Linda Kok, Senior Analyst for Data Access and Policy at VIReC, Tim Trautman, Program Manager at VA Informatics and Computing Infrastructure (VINCI), and Andrew Holbrook, VINCI’s Data Manager, QA and Training Lead will also be available to answer questions from attendees.
