Session Title Hypnosis and Meditation for Chronic Pain: Conceptual and Methods Considerations
The author will share conceptual background information about the use of hypnosis and meditation for chronic pain and describe two clinical trials in which these interventions have been examined. This presentation will share findings from the Chronic Pain Skills Study, a completed randomized clinical trial comparing hypnosis (HYP), mindfulness meditation (MM), and education control (ED) in 328 Veterans. In addition to sharing outcomes, the presentation will describe the hypnosis and meditation interventions in depth, highlighting methodological considerations for delivering these via in-person groups in a pragmatic trial design. The presentation will introduce the Matching Adults to Chronic Pain Treatments (MATCH) study, an RCT that compares Cognitive Hypnotic Therapy, Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy, Cognitive Behavior Therapy, and usual care. Methodological and clinical details about the development and delivery of the interventions will be discussed.
