Leonard Egede, MD, MS, director of the VA HSR&D Research Enhancement Award Program's (REAP) Center for Disease Prevention and Health Interventions for Diverse Populations, in Charleston, South Carolina, has been named Allen Johnson Endowed Chair in Internal Medicine and Geriatrics at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC).
Dr. Egede, who is also a Professor, Division of General Internal Medicine and Geriatrics and Director of the Center for Healthcare Disparities at MUSC, is a nationally recognized leader in the field of ethnic and minority healthcare disparities. Dr. Egede has participated and led research projects designed to understand racial/ethnic variations in healthcare. He is currently the principal investigator for the VA HSR&D-funded study, "Telepsychology -Service Delivery for Elderly Depressed Veterans."
Dr. Egede has authored over 35 original peer-reviewed publications related to psychosocial influences on health and racial/ethnic differences in health outcomes. He serves as a reviewer for the VA HSR&D Scientific Merit Review Board, and is a standing member of the National Institutes of Health scientific review study section. He currently serves as a Deputy Editor of the Journal of General Internal Medicine, and is on the editorial board of Current Diabetes Reviews.
The MUSC Allen Johnson Endowed Chair in Internal Medicine and Geriatrics was established in honor of Dr. Allen Johnson, a dedicated educator, clinician, and administrator.
