VA HSR&D Acting Deputy Director, Andrew Guccione, PT, PhD, DPT, FAPTA, has been named the American Physical Therapy Association's (APTA) Mary McMillan Lecturer for 2010.
Dr. Guccione will present the McMillan Lecture in June of 2010 during APTA's next annual meeting. The lecture, which is APTA's highest honor, is expected to relate to the contributions that the awardee has made to the profession of physical therapy, and is submitted for publication in Physical Therapy.
Guccione has been APTA's Senior Vice President of Practice and Research, and prior to joining APTA, he was director of physical therapy services at Massachusetts General Hospital. He has been on faculty and held academic appointments at the Boston University PT Program, Boston University School of Medicine, Harvard Medical School, and the MGH Institute of Health Professions. He has served on the APTA Board of Directors and as APTA Speaker of the House. Guccione holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Boston College; Master's degrees in both philosophy and physical therapy; a certificate in gerontological studies from Boston University; a PhD from Boston University's Department of Sociology; and a DPT from MGH Institute of Health Professions. Guccione is also the primary author of more than two dozen professional publications in the areas of geriatrics, arthritis, professional issues and ethics, as well as the editor of a textbook, Geriatric Physical Therapy.
The award was established to honor of Mary McMillan, a dedicated pioneer in the field of physical therapy, and the founding President of APTA. The prestigious award acknowledges and honors an APTA member who has made a distinguished contribution to the profession, and provides the recipient with an opportunity to share his or her achievements and ideas with members through a lecture presented at the Association's annual conference.
