Michael Steinman, MD
Michael Steinman, MD, a geriatrician and researcher in the Division of Geriatrics at the San Francisco VA Medical Center, and part of VA HSR&D's Chronic Heart Failure Quality Enhancement Research Initiative (CHF-QUERI), received the Society for General Internal Medicine's (SGIM) 2015 Mid-Career Research Mentorship Award.
Dr. Steinman is a national leader in identifying and improving how clinicians prescribe medications for clinically complex older adults. For example, his QUERI-funded study, "Guideline Adherence in Elders with Heart Failure and Multiple Comorbidities," provided VA and other healthcare systems with important information about how best to guide strategies for evaluating and measuring quality of care for patients with heart failure. In addition to his clinical practice and research, Dr. Steinman has mentored several young investigators, and in 2014 received the Distinction in Mentoring Award from the University of California, San Francisco.
The SGIM Mid-Career Research Mentorship Award is intended to recognize the mentoring activities of general internal medicine investigators. Award recipients come from a wide-ranging pool of outstanding, mid-career clinician-investigators who are actively engaged in research and mentorship of junior investigators. SGIM is a national medical society of 3,000 physicians which include general internal medicine faculty of nearly every medical school and major teaching hospital in the United States.
