Abstract:

The Toolkit is a collaborative project between the VISN 1 New England MIRECC Peer Education Center, and the VISN 4 MIRECC Peer Resource Center. Peer Specialists (PSs) are VA employees in recovery from mental illnesses and substance abuse disorders who help other Veterans to successfully engage in mental health and substance use treatment. The toolkit provides: (1) a definition of the PS role (including approved Position Descriptions); (2) a systematic approach for their integration onto clinical teams; and (3) information about training and supervising PSs, and information about other resources. It is intended to help VHA medical centers and CBOCs to comply with the White House Executive Order to hire and deploy an additional 800 Peer Specialists, or PSs, within VHA clinical care by December 31, 2013.
