Comparing Methods for Left Ventricular Ejection Fraction Clinical Information Extraction

Meystre S, Kim Y, Garvin JH. Comparing Methods for Left Ventricular Ejection Fraction Clinical Information Extraction. Paper presented at: American Medical Informatics Association Translational Bioinformatics / Clinical Research Informatics Annual Joint Summits on Translational Science; 2012 Mar 19; San Francisco, CA.

Abstract:

In the context of the ADAHF (Automated Data Acquisition of Heart Failure) project at the VHA, we are developing a Natural Language Processing application to extract heart failure assessment and treatment quality measures such as the left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF). We compared two versions of LVEF information extraction modules, one based on regular expressions, and the other one on machine learning algorithms. The latter performed better, with an F1-measure of 95.0% (versus 89.1%).
