Smith BM. Evaluation of TBI Screening Processes and Healthcare Utilization. Paper presented at: Federal Interagency Conference on Traumatic Brain Injury; 2011 Jun 13; Washington, DC.
First, we plan to describe facility and patient characteristics associated with completion of the mild TBI screen, the association between patient characteristics and the results of the screen including the symptoms Veterans experience at the time of the screen. In addition to demographics such as gender, age, and education, we will also discuss time since separation from military service, number of deployments, and service connection status. We will then describe the patient characteristics associated with completion of the CTE, and an overview of the results of the examination. We will also examine the costs and utilization for Veterans who receive the mild TBI screen. We will describe inpatient admissions, outpatient visits, the most frequent diagnoses for visits, most common prescriptions, total VA costs, inpatient costs, and outpatient costs.
