Abstract:

BACKGROUND:This plenary sesion talk overviews the VHA organization, databases available to VA researchers, and examples of GIS applications used in health services research. OBJECTIVES:The objectives of the talk is to provide Maine Medical Center physicians who want to pursue research in the VA what types of data VA currently collects and how these data might be used in epidemiological studies. METHODS:Several past HSRandD studies will be presented including Geographic Assess to Rehabilitation Services for Traumatically Injured OEF/OIF Veterans and the VA Health Care Atlas. IMPACT:Non-VA physicians at Maine Medical Center may want to actively engage in research that will benefit the VA and the Veterans it serves in rural areas.
