Uphold CR, Rittman MR, Boylstein CA, Hannold EM, Freytes IM. Readjustment Processes of OEF/OIF Veterans & Families Living in Puerto Rico. Paper presented at: VA Nurses Organization Annual Meeting; 2007 May 10; Washington, DC.
This presentation will highlight the preliminary findings and lessons learned from the project, “Readjustment Processes of OEF/OIF Veterans and Families Living In Puerto Rico.” The aim of this project is to facilitate post-deployment transitions of Puerto Rican troops and their families. The Lazarus and Folkman stress and coping theoretical model guided the study and was used to investigate the interplay of cognitive appraisal, resources, and constraints on affecting adaptational outcomes. The design was a cross-sectional, descriptive study, which used qualitative methods. The sample consisted of 7 veterans and 7 family members who were recruited from the Mayaquez VA Outpatient Clinic (MOPC), which serves the Western region of Puerto Rico. Investigators conducted in-depth interviews, which were audio recorded. Data were transcribed in Spanish verbatim and translated to English. N6, a computer program, was used to analyze the data using a constant comparative approach. Results will be used to develop culturally appropriate educational materials and to develop future interventions and studies that integrate successful coping resources and modify constraints identified by study participants.
