Description: This session reviews the regulatory policies and principles that govern access to VA data and offers guidance for determining the data necessary for projects. Additionally, descriptions of the categories of VA data use are provided. Finally, the presenter describes how VA data stewards apply these regulations in their data access request processes and where to find instructions for requesting access to the most frequently analyzed data sources. New data users may reference ‘Meet VIReC: The Researcher's Guide to VA Data’ and ‘Navigating VA Data Sources: An Overview of Commonly Used Databases’ prior to attending.
Objectives:
• Describe Ethical Principles Underlying VA Data Access & Use Policy
• Explain the difference between VA research, preparatory to research, and operations projects
• Detail regulatory requirements for accessing and using VA data for all types of projects
• Explain who stewards the data and how to request access for common data sources
