Innovative Applications of Video Telehealth in Veteran Healthcare: Two Projects

Description: Project 1:Efficacy of Tele-Initiation of Positive Airway Pressure in Obstructive Sleep Apnea
The SARS-CoV-2 pandemic has necessitated a transition to telemedicine, inclusive of a transition from face to face to tele-initiation of positive airway pressure (PAP) in patients with obstructive sleep apnea. Obstructive sleep apnea is highly prevalent among Veterans, estimated at 22.2% in 2018. The objective of this retrospective study is to compare 30-and 90-day PAP adherence and efficacy among patients who completed a PAP set up visit using telehealth compared to patients who completed a PAP set up visit using a traditional face-to-face encounter (prior to COVID-19).

Project 2:Improving Access for Veterans Experiencing Homelessness through VA Video Telehealth
Over 37,000 Veterans experience homelessness and 1.4 million Veterans are considered “at risk.” Recipients in VA’s video telehealth tablet program included homeless Veterans who could benefit from clinical services. The objective of our mixed methods study was to examine how housing instability influences Veterans’ video telehealth tablet adoption and use.
