Prazosin for Posttraumatic Headache Randomized Controlled Trial in Veterans and Active Duty Service Members

by Cynthia Mayer, DO ; Murray Raskind, MD
Seminar date: 9/7/2021

Description: A decade ago, Dr. Robert Ruff and colleagues at the Louis Stokes Cleveland VA described a marked reduction of posttraumatic headache (PTH) frequency and increased restorative sleep in an open label prazosin trial in Veterans who had suffered mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) in Iraq or Afghanistan. We performed a placebo-controlled prazosin trial in Soldiers at Joint Base Lewis McChord and Veterans at VA Puget Sound. In a planned interim analysis of results in the first 40 participants, prazosin was significantly and robustly superior to placebo for reducing frequency of headache days/month and headache impact severity. These results and a possible mechanism for prazosin efficacy in PTH will be discussed
Intended Audience: This presentation is intended for clinicians and investigators.
