VA’s Embedded Research Workforce and Operational Partnerships: Lessons Learned on the Path to VA as a Learning Healthcare System

by Elizabeth Yano, PhD, MSPH
Seminar date: 10/20/2020

Description: Learning healthcare system principles assume functional research-operations partnerships where research evidence and day-to-day operations meld seamlessly into new routines of evidence-based practice and policy that guide healthcare organizations toward the quadruple aim, but frequently lack details on how to make these partnerships work. As the nation’s largest integrated healthcare delivery system, the VA has a robust research program capable of drawing on these principles to transform Veterans’ care through an embedded research workforce working in partnership with the leaders, managers, and frontline providers and staff who oversee and deliver services. This cyberseminar’s objectives are to: 1. To briefly orient attendees to the VA and its research enterprise, including an overview of its embedded research workforce; 2. To review types of research-operational partnerships and different approaches to their multilevel engagement; and, 3. To discuss lessons learned from these partnerships on the path to enhancing research impacts and VA as a learning healthcare system.
