VA Palo Alto Health Care System
Menlo Park, CA

Daniel M. Blonigen, PhD, is a Research Career Scientist and an Associate Director at the Center for Innovation to Implementation (Ci2i), VA Palo Alto Health Care System. He is also an Affiliate Investigator with the VA National Center for Homelessness Among Veterans, and a Clinical Associate Professor (Affiliated) in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, Stanford University School of Medicine. He received his doctorate in clinical psychology from the University of Minnesota and is a former VA Career Development Awardee in Clinical Sciences R&D.

Dr. Blonigen's scholarly mission is to develop innovations to improve access and engagement in substance use and mental health care for vulnerable populations, test if these innovations are effective, and facilitate their implementation. In collaboration with his partners in VA's Homeless Program Office, Office of Mental Health Services, and Office of Connected Care, this mission focuses on three areas of critical importance to Veteran healthcare: (i) improving treatment engagement and outcomes for justice-involved and homeless Veterans, (ii) evaluating virtual care services for Veterans with substance use and mental health disorders, and (iii) developing, testing, and implementing peer-supported mobile health interventions. His research has led to development of national training initiatives on mobile health support for peers at OCC-funded Virtual Health Resource Centers and Moral Reconation Therapy for Veterans Justice Program Specialists. He is currently a PI of three VA-funded hybrid trials to test behavioral and/or peer-based interventions for Veterans with chronic homelessness and/or cyclical involvement in the criminal justice system.

In addition to research, Dr. Blonigen is actively involved in mentoring and teaching VA research fellows and Stanford University residents in addiction medicine. He is a member of several VA management and oversight committees and has served as a grant reviewer for national and international funders. He is an invited speaker at national conferences and cyberseminars devoted to substance use and mental health research, and he holds editorial positions for leading addiction, personality, and assessment journals.
