Mark Ilgen, PhD, is a clinical psychologist and a health services researcher with an interest in improving outcomes for individuals with problematic alcohol or drug use. He is currently a Research Career Scientist in the VA Center for Clinical Management Research in Ann Arbor, Michigan and a Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Michigan. Dr. Ilgen received his doctorate from the University of Colorado, Boulder, and completed his clinical internship and postdoctoral fellowship at the Palo Alto VA. A core focus of Dr. Ilgen's work has been on understanding the relationship between pain and substance use. This research involves developing and testing psychosocial interventions to improve pain-related functioning and decrease substance use in adults with chronic pain and substance use disorders. In addition, he has studied substance use as a risk factor for suicide and unintentional overdose, including ongoing work to test the efficacy of interventions to reduce suicide risk in those with substance use disorders. Dr. Ilgen's research has been supported with multiple grants from VA, the Department of Defense (DoD), and the National Institutes of Health (NIH). He has also published over 170 peer-reviewed scientific papers on topics related to addiction and/or suicide prevention. In his role as the Director of the University of Michigan Addiction Treatment Services (UMATS), he has worked to structure addiction services at the University of Michigan to be accessible and appealing to a wide range of patients, and based on current research.
