VA Mobile Health Applications in Clinical Practice

Lovejoy TI. VA Mobile Health Applications in Clinical Practice. Paper presented at: American Psychological Association Annual Convention; 2015 Aug 8; Toronto, Canada.

Abstract:

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Mobile Health Program oversees the development of mobile health applications that improve the health of patients by increasing patients' access to their electronic health records, facilitating communication between patients and their VA clinicians, and providing mobile tools patients can use outside of the clinical setting to maximize the benefits of treatment. Several free VA mobile health applications that may be incorporated into evidence-based mental and behavioral health treatments are available through the VA App Store and commercial app stores. This presentation will provide an overview of the VA Mobile Health Program, with particular emphasis on VA-developed mental and behavioral health applications currently available to patients. A step-by-step guide to incorporating mobile health applications into clinical practice for both VA and non-VA psychologists will be presented using examples of mobile health applications for smoking cessation, mindfulness, and the treatment of insomnia using cognitive behavioral therapy.
