Miech EJ, Lowery J, Damschroeder L. Qualitative Comparative Analysis and VA Implementation Research: an Introduction. [Cyberseminar]. 2015 Jul 14.
This national online presentation was sponsored by the VA QUERI Implementation Research Coordinator community led by Dr. Anne Sales and provided an introduction to Qualitative Comparative Analysis (QCA). QCA is a numerical, case-oriented approach for examining complex causality in implementation. QCA helps determine necessary and sufficient conditions for implementation success and allows for equifinality (i.e., when multiple pathways lead to the same outcome). QCA uses numbers to represent "membership" in a defined group or set, and draws upon applied set theory and Boolean algebra to reveal direct, explicit connections between specific combinations of conditions and implementation outcomes. This was an introduction to QCA using examples from several recent VA implementation evaluations.
