Measuring and Improving Sustainability in Mental Health (MH) System Redesign within the Veterans Administration

Ford J, Krahn DD, Wise M, Oliver K, Wheelock A. Measuring and Improving Sustainability in Mental Health (MH) System Redesign within the Veterans Administration. Paper presented at: AcademyHealth Annual Research Meeting; 2011 Jun 12; Seattle, WA.

Abstract:

This research examines staff insights on organizational attributes impacting sustainability propensity of change projects implemented as part of the Veterans Administration Mental Health Systems Redesign (MHSR) initiative. Change team members were asked to retrospectively answer questions related to sustainability. We examined the variability in sustainability across facilities and by staff characteristics and explored individual responses that predict sustainability. Qualitative interviews were conducted in two Veteran Integrated Service Networks (VISNs) in order to better understand the organizational factors that facilitate and impede change and sustainability.
