Jia H, Cowper DC, Wu SS, Vogel WB, Zheng Y, Reker DM. Workshop Presentation: Combining veterans' healthcare data from VHA and Medicare: methodological issues and research examples. Paper presented at: VA HSR&D National Meeting; 2007 Feb 16; Arlington, VA.

Abstract:

Workshop objectives: After attending this session, participants will be familiar with VHA, Medicare, Medicaid, and US Renal Data System data bases that allow them to track veterans’ health care utilization, and will understand methodological issues inherent in these data such as data quality and completeness. Workshop participants will learn how to find information about these data on the VIReC website and how to request access to these data. The Activities: An overview of VHA inpatient and outpatient data, Medicare and Medicaid claims data, and United States Renal Data System data will be presented. Three research projects using these data will be discussed, including a discussion of methodological issues inherent in these data bases. Target Audience: Health services researchers using VA and non-VA data, especially researchers new to the VA and/or to VA data and information systems.
