Rittman MR. The Experience of Time in the Transition from Hospital to Home Following Stroke. Paper presented at: Minnesota Health Resources Annual Conference; 2004 Apr 30; Banff, Canada.
The transition from hospital to home after stroke requires re-ordering termporal aspects of daily life and re-integrating one's sense of self. While the experience of time is an important feature of the transition, little is known about how stroke survivors experience time, the impact on one's sense of self, or strategies used to manage time. Interview data from fifty-one mail stroke survivors are used to describe experiences related to changes in the temporal order of life, disruptions in sense of self, and strategies used to manage time. Findings indicate that changes in the temporal order are related to functional impairments due to disruption in the taken-for-granted body. The disruption ushers in changes in the way stroke survivors see themselves. At one-month post discharge, survivors struggle with establishing routines in their day and coping with increased idle time. Strategies for managing time are passing time, waiting on time and killing time.
