Data-Based Case Reviews of Patients with Opioid Related Risk Factors as a Tool to Prevent Overdose and Suicide

Lewis ET. Data-Based Case Reviews of Patients with Opioid Related Risk Factors as a Tool to Prevent Overdose and Suicide. SoSP (Suicide Prevention) [Cyberseminar]. HSR&D. 2018 Jun 4.

Abstract:

VHA Notice 2018-08 requires data-based case reviews of patients at very high risk of an overdose or suicide-related event based on their score on the Stratification Tool for Opioid Risk Mitigation (STORM), and point of care data-based case reviews of patients prior to opioid initiation. This talk will present data on the relationship between safe opioid prescribing and overdose or suicide-related events, the STORM model and dashboard, and the requirements of VHA Notice 2018-08. The talk will emphasize the role that mental health providers have to play in mitigating risk for patients who are or may be prescribed opioids. Intended audience: researchers interested in the relationship between safe opioid prescribing and preventing overdose or suicide-related events, and mental health providers who interact with patients who are prescribed opioids or who have chronic pain.
