The Surgical Pause: Measuring Frailty and Doing Something About It

Description: The Surgical Pause was recently recognized by The Joint Commission and The National Quality Forum with the 2023 Eisenberg Award for Patient Safety and Quality at a National Level. By systematically screening for frailty in patients considering surgery, this program delivers interdisciplinary care to those who need it most in order to improve postoperative outcomes. Staff surgeon and health services researcher, Dr. Daniel E Hall will describe the origin of this innovative program, the substantial evidence supporting is success and the process of diffusion throughout VA from a single site to more than 50 VA Medical Centers and formal adoption by the National Surgery Office.

• Review lessons learned from implementation across VA and public sector hospitals
