Balancing Characteristics of Veterans on Long-term Opioid Therapy Who Used vs. Did Not Use CIH Services

Description: Use of complementary and integrative health (CIH) services within the Veterans Health Administration by Veterans on long-term opioid therapy differs by Veteran characteristics, including sex and race. There is promising evidence relating exposure to CIH services and reduced use of opioids, however rigorous analysis of this relationship requires balancing characteristics associated with CIH use. The aim of this talk is to compare characteristics of a national cohort of Veterans who used vs. did not use CIH services in the context of long-term opioid therapy and describe methods used to balance these groups on exposure-related covariates as a step toward estimating the causal relationship between CIH and opioid tapering outcomes. Target audience: Individuals broadly interested in Whole Health, CIH, opioid therapy, or chronic pain management, including health services researchers, clinicians, VHA policy makers, administrators, and other health professionals.
