Veterans and COVID-19 Vaccination: Two Studies

by Rani Elwy, PhD, MSc ; Taona Haderlein, PhD, MA ; Guneet Jasuja, PhD
Seminar date: 1/24/2022

Description: Guneet Jasuja, PhD, and Taona Haderlein, PhD, will discuss findings from each of their recent studies.

Jasuga: Attitudes and Intentions of US Veterans regarding COVID-19 vaccinations: Dr. Jasuja will highlight findings from the recently published survey study in JAMA Network Open, conducted in partnership with SHEP and to support the National Center for Health Promotion and Disease Prevention’s COVID-19 vaccine distribution efforts. The research team surveyed 1,178 Veterans regarding their attitudes toward and intentions for receiving COVID-19 vaccines to inform ongoing, systemwide VA communication efforts to increase the uptake of these vaccines.

Haderlein: Serious Mental Illness Diagnosis and COVID-19 Vaccine Uptake in the Veterans Health Administration: People with serious mental illnesses exhibit higher rates of COVID-19 infection and death than the general population and are vulnerable to medical and psychosocial stressors that may affect COVID-19 vaccine uptake. This presentation will examine the association between serious mental illness diagnoses and COVID-19 vaccination uptake in a national sample of VA patients. Intended Audience: Clinicians, operational leaders, and researchers who are interested in COVID-19 vaccine uptake in vulnerable populations, vaccine hesitancy, and promoting vaccine acceptance among all Veterans.
