Description: Abstract: Improving patient access to care necessitates balancing patient demand with provider availability. In the Veterans Health Administration, the Patient Aligned Care Team Medical Home model adopts a fixed panel size based on provider type (physician or advanced practice provider). Using this panel size in conjunction with numbers of primary care providers and patients assigned to clinics, the presenters will describe a clinic-based capacity metric. Presenters will investigate rural-urban variation in staffing relative to patient volume and depict ways that this metric can be used to identify primary care clinics at greatest risk of insufficient staffing.
Target Audience: Primary care providers, administrators, and researchers interested in improving access by implementing a simple metric to identify potential provider gaps
