Navigating VA Data Access: An Overview of the Process for Requesting Permission to Use VA Data

Description: Ms. Kok will describe the three categories of VA data use and the regulatory policies and requirements that govern access to data. She will describe how VA data stewards apply these regulations in their data access request processes and show where to find instructions for requesting access to the most frequently analyzed data sources. New data users may reference "Meet VIReC: The Researcher's Guide to VA Data" and "Meet VIReC: The Researcher's Guide to VA Data and Navigating VA Data Sources: An Overview of Commonly Used Databases " prior to attending this session. Objectives:
• Describe the difference between VA research, preparatory to research, and operations projects.
• Detail regulatory requirements for accessing and using VA data for all types of projects.
• Explain who stewards the data and how to request access for common data sources.
• Provide key resources for determining the data access processes for each VA data source and where to go for additional support.
