Description: Women Veterans are at significantly increased risk for suicide, compared to their non-Veteran counterparts. Women Veterans also report high rates of trauma exposure across the lifespan, particularly sexual assault and other forms of interpersonal violence. In this presentation, Dr. Monteith will discuss recent research on the role of trauma in suicidal self-directed violence among women Veterans. She will also discuss ways in which experiencing trauma may influence lethal means access (e.g., firearms) and help-seeking. Research recently conducted, as well as initiatives currently underway, will be described.
