Description: This presentation will present the results of a retrospective cohort study that assesses the comparative safety of co-prescribing opioids and benzodiazepines among 17,476 patients receiving Veteran Affairs (VA) health care and diagnosed with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). We will compare the relative risk of all-cause mortality among VA patients with PTSD who received new opioid and benzodiazepine therapies concurrently, as compared to propensity-score matched patients who received drugs from only one of or neither of these medication classes. We will also present the risk of death by overdose, circulatory and respiratory-related causes among patients newly co-prescribed opioids and benzodiazepines, relative to patients who are prescribed opioids only, benzodiazepines only or neither medication. Intended Audience: providers, policy makers, and health services researchers.
