Long Run Reliance on the VA: A Fifteen Year Follow-up of VA and Medicare Healthcare Use for Medicare-eligible Veterans in the 1999 Large Health Survey of Enrolled Veterans

by Paul Hebert, PhD ; Chuan-fen Liu, PhD, MPH
Seminar date: 4/19/2017

Description: We identified a cohort of Veterans who participated in the Large Health Survey of Enrolled Veterans and were newly eligible for Medicare in 2000, and followed their Medicare and VA healthcare use through 2014. We identified Veterans who relied heavily on the VA, and on Medicare, respectively, and compared their survey responses at baseline on socio-demographics, health behaviors, and health- and social-risk factors. We also compared their healthcare use in VA and Medicare. Intended Audience: Researchers who are interested in comparisons between VA-provided and Medicare-provided care for dually eligible Veterans.
