Description: Care provided by nurse practitioners (NPs) and physician assistants (PAs) complicates the measurement of reliance on VA primary and specialty care among Medicare eligible Veterans, because NPs/PAs practice in both primary and specialty care clinics. We can identify VA clinics by stop code, but can’t identify type of clinic in Medicare. This objective of this analysis is to develop and test a method to attribute the visits provided by NP/PA into primary, specialty, and surgical care. This method will be used to describe trends in reliance on VA primary, specialty, and surgical care visits.
