Racial/ethnic disparities in cesarean childbirth deliveries are well-documented and remain a pressing public health problem in the United States. Disparate birthing outcomes likely result from various factors that impact the Veteran at multiple timepoints during her pregnancy and through childbirth. Lay labor support, such as doula services, may provide a valuable addition to the VA’s maternity care coordination program in an effort to mitigate disparate perinatal outcomes among Veterans of color. To address these disparities, we launched an innovative community-based doula care program for pregnant Veterans of color in New Orleans, LA and Durham, North Carolina.
Intended Audience: VA researchers, clinicians, and policymakers
