HSR&D Announces Daniel Deykin Award for Outstanding Mentor

Steven Asch, MD, MPH

Steven Asch, MD, MPH

Steven Asch, MD, MPH, and John Piette, PhD, are recipients of the 2016 HSR&D Daniel Deykin Award for Outstanding Mentor, which is presented each year to a VA/HSR&D researcher(s) who exhibits outstanding dedication and skill in mentoring the next generation of researchers, particularly in guiding them toward a thorough understanding of the positive impact research can have on the health and care of Veterans.

Director of HSR&D's Center for Innovation to Implementation (Ci2i), Dr. Asch also is a tenured professor and practicing internist and palliative care physician - and the author of more than 300 peer-reviewed articles, many authored with mentees. In addition, he focuses on training physician fellows in health services research. As stated by one of his mentees, Dr. Karl Lorenz, a former HSR&D Career Development Awardee, Dr. Asch's "appetite for learning, sharp intellect, ability to communicate clearly, and focus on benefiting his mentees continues to make him a highly sought after mentor for many individuals. His skills are reflected in the many trainees who seek him out, and in the academic and other signs of productivity that his mentees have achieved."

John Piette, PhD

John Piette, PhD

As an HSR&D Research Career Scientist and part of HSR&D's Center for Clinical Management Research (CCMR), Dr. Piette is a global leader in innovation for chronic disease self-management support. His work focuses on improving access to quality of self-management support among patients with a variety of chronic conditions, including diabetes, cardiovascular disease, depression, and chronic pain, with a particular interest in how the information patients report during automated assessments can be used to improve patient outcomes and identify those at high risk. In addition, he is an outstanding mentor, as evidenced by one of his mentees, Dr. Michele Heisler, also part of CCMR, who stated, "His style of mentorship, his ability to convey knowledge, and his unswerving dedication to his mentees have been hugely important not only for me personally, but also in showing me how I should approach the mentorship of my junior colleagues."

Drs. Asch and Piette exemplify the type of mentorship that makes HSR&D research such a rewarding experience for junior investigators.
