Anne C. Melzer, MD, MS, is a pulmonary and critical care staff physician at the Minneapolis VA Health Care System and a health services researcher. She is an Assistant Professor of Medicine at the University of Minnesota and a core investigator at the Center for Care Delivery and Outcomes Research, a VA COIN. Dr. Melzer completed her MD at the Medical College of Wisconsin and went on to complete residency in Internal Medicine and fellowship in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at the University of Washington. She completed her Masters of Epidemiology at the University of Washington School of Public Health before joining the faculty in Minneapolis. Dr. Melzer's research focuses on improving quality of care for patients with tobacco-related lung diseases, particularly through boosting rates of tobacco cessation. Her Career Development Award, "Proactive Outreach for Smokers with COPD: Engaging Patients to Quit," will develop and test an electronic program designed to increase supported quit attempts among smokers with COPD, increasing the reach of one of the only interventions that decreases mortality for this population.
