Whole Health
VA is transforming into a Whole Health system of care. Rather than islands of medical care focused on disease management, a Whole Health system is comprised of teams of professionals who build lasting partnerships with Veterans and develop personalized health plans based on an individual Veteran’s values, needs, and goals. VA’s Whole Health model, often illustrated as the Circle of Health, encourages and supports Veterans as they take an active role in improving their own health and well-being.
HSR’s Whole Health research studies every aspect of this emerging model, including implementation science, cost-effectiveness, outcome measurement, and integration with technology and virtual care. Health systems researchers develop and evaluate Whole Health program components such as personal health planning, complementary and integrative health, coaching, peer support, and well-being programs focused on areas such as nutrition, stress reduction, movement, or healthy relationships.
