Telehealth
VA has been a pioneer in virtual care and telehealth, adopting and testing technologies such as secure videoconferencing, store-and-forward capabilities for sharing images and data, remote monitoring, and mobile apps. According to VA’s Office of Connected Care, about 40 percent of Veterans receiving VA care—2.4 million people—participated in nearly 12 million telehealth encounters in 2023, including more than 9 million to Veterans in their homes or other offsite locations.
Rural Veterans accounted for 40 percent of these 2023 telehealth encounters, but VA’s Office of Rural Health reports that 42 percent of Veterans enrolled in VA care do not have home internet that could support VA virtual care services.
Addressing this digital divide is a significant area of health systems research. Other key research includes cost-effectiveness, patient and provider satisfaction, overcoming implementation challenges, and comparing virtual and in-person care outcomes.
