Polytrauma

Polytrauma—injuries to multiple body systems or organs, often occurring simultaneously—became an area of VA research focus when, in 2005, VA implemented a nationwide Polytrauma/TBI System of Care. These efforts developed in response to the increasing number of post-9/11 Veterans returning with complex and multiple injuries, particularly those related to blast exposures. Survivors of polytrauma often deal with complex and interrelated physical, psychological, and cognitive conditions requiring specialized and coordinated care.

The goals of HSR’s polytrauma research include understanding how to optimize these coordinated care models; how to improve functional outcomes and quality of life; assessing the long-term outcomes of polytrauma; addressing complex interactions and co-occurring conditions; and addressing the considerable health, financial, and employment burdens among family members who care for Veterans with polytrauma.
