Cardiovascular Disease

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a term encompassing a range of conditions that affect the heart and blood vessels and disrupt the normal flow of blood, which can lead to serious health problems, including heart failure and stroke.

HSR conducts research on cardiovascular disease prevention, treatment, and management specifically tailored to Veterans, who are more likely than non-Veterans to be diagnosed with cardiovascular conditions. Nearly 50 percent of Veterans in VA care have at least one cardiovascular condition, and HSR researchers work to develop and evaluate effective prevention and management strategies for Veterans, modify specific cardiovascular risk factors through medication and lifestyle changes, and reduce differences in cardiovascular care among different Veteran populations.

  • Prolonged Deployment to Military Bases with Open Burn Pits Increases Risk of Adverse Health Outcomes
This study sought to determine whether the duration of deployment to military bases with open burn pits was associated with an increased risk of diagnosed respiratory and cardiovascular disease. Findings showed that prolonged deployment to military bases with open burn pits may increase the risk of developing adverse health outcomes. For every 100 days of deployment to bases with burn pits, the ad...

  • Individualized Provider Reminders Improve Statin Use and Adherence among Veterans with Atherosclerotic Cardiovascular Disease
This multi-site trial compared usual care to personalized reminders to providers in improving the use of high-intensity statins in Veterans with atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD). Findings showed that centrally processed individualized reminders to providers led to a significant increase in high-intensity statin (HIS) use and statin adherence among Veterans with ASCVD. In the interven...

  • Traumatic Brain Injury May Be a Potentially Novel Risk Factor for Cardiovascular Disease in Veterans
This study sought to determine the association between TBI and subsequent cardiovascular disease (CVD) in post-9/11 era Veterans. Findings showed that post-9/11 Veterans with mild TBI, moderate to severe TBI, and penetrating TBI were more likely to develop CVD compared to Veterans without TBI. Although the risk was highest shortly after injury, TBI remained significantly associated with CVD for ye...
