Patients in recovery and opioids

Phillips K, Gordon AJ, Walley AY. Patients in recovery and opioids. Paper presented at: Society of General Internal Medicine Annual Meeting; 2008 Apr 9; Pittsburgh, PA.

Abstract:

General internists commonly care for patients with opioid use disorders and are well-positioned to provide treatment and/or referral for their substance dependent patients. However, studies have shown that general internists feel they lack the knowledge, skills, and resources to provide substance dependence treatment. The use of Patients In Recovery (PIR) has been shown to be an effective way to educate physicians about substance use disorders. The goal of our workshop is to incorporate PIR in an interactive small-group format to enhance general internists’ knowledge of opioid dependence and its management.
