2008 — Building Networks of Supports for Veterans at-risk for Suicide: A community Approach

Lead/Presenter: I. Magaly (Maggie) Freytes
All Authors:

Objectives:
The objectives for this session are: 1) Obtain Veterans feedback on findings from a previous Innovation Project. 2) Discuss Veterans ideas about developing: innovative crisis intervention services, effective networks of support, and improving channels of communication to better serve Veterans at-risk for suicide. 3) Obtain Veterans input on research aims and study procedures.

Methods:
This project is builds on findings from an FY18 VA's Innovators Network SEED project. We want to build on our innovation project's findings by developing a research study to identify and test strategies to engage Veterans and their families and community partners in the development and coordination of suicide prevention efforts across the continuum of care. The ideas for the proposed project are currently been developed and we would like Veterans' input on our aims and procedures.

Results:
1) What are participants thoughts and ideas about the need and value of written resources for at-risk Veterans? 2) What areas of suicide prevention do participants feel need further examination? 3)What are participants thoughts about future innovative crisis intervention and suicide prevention efforts? 4) What are participants ideas for improving communication between VA and non-VA providers and between providers and Veterans? 5) How can we best engage community partners to better serve Veterans at-risk for suicide and their families?

Implications:
Veterans, family members, VA and community providers, suicide prevention experts.

Impacts:
We expect to have well-developed aims and study recruitment procedures for a future HSRD Merit Proposal to examine suicide prevention efforts within the VA and the community.
