SP-AMP/SPRINT Core Common Data Elements Repository

The Suicide Prevention Actively Managed Portfolio (SP-AMP) is establishing a Core Common Data Elements (CCDE) Repository, managed by the Suicide Prevention Research Impact NeTwork (SPRINT), for studies funded under the SP-AMP, including the new NOSI released on March 11th, 2026. The new NOSI is available on the intranet. If you have VA network access copy and paste vaww.research.va.gov/funding/docs/amp/NOT-RD-01-SPR-Suicide-Prevention-AMP.pdf into your browser.

Effective Date: Studies with start dates on or after January 1, 2027, will be required to collect CCDE from research participants and contribute data to the repository.

Repository Purpose

The CCDE Repository will provide a centralized infrastructure for collecting, organizing, storing, and sharing standardized data from suicide prevention research studies. This repository addresses persistent methodological challenges to evaluating evidence for suicide prevention interventions including small sample sizes, inconsistent measurement approaches, and low base-rate outcomes. Specifically, the repository will enable:

  • Pooled analyses across multiple studies
  • Examination of what treatments work best for whom
  • Longitudinal follow-up beyond individual study timelines
  • Accelerated translation of research findings into clinical practice

Required Common Data Elements

All studies (see footnote a below) with start dates on or after January 1, 2027, must collect standardized measures across the following domains and schedule:

Note: For Veterans in VHA care, the repository team can pull these from CDW (see footnote b below)

aExceptions to these requirements may be made on a case-by-case basis after consultation with the CCDE Initiative Project Coordinator and ORD Director of the Suicide Prevention Actively Managed Portfolio.

bThe CCDE Repository team can extract these data elements from the VHA Corporate Data Warehouse (CDW) on behalf of study teams upon request. When this is conducted, investigators do not need to collect these items. This service is available for studies collecting identifiable participant data, as linkage to individual participants is necessary for accurate data extraction and matching. All available assessments gathered at every VHA encounter will be pulled for eligible participants, ensuring comprehensive longitudinal data capture.

This service is limited to participants who receive their care within the VA Healthcare System and whose data are available in the CDW. Study teams who prefer not to conduct their own data pulls, or who lack direct CDW access, may utilize this service. However, if your study includes participants who receive care outside VA facilities (such as community care providers or non-VA hospitals), or if your study protocol requires de-identified data, the repository team will not be able to pull data for those individuals, and alternative data collection arrangements will be necessary.

To request data pull assistance, contact the CCDE Initiative Project Coordinator, Miranda Pappas, at Miranda.Pappas@va.gov.

It is recommended (but not required) that studies focused on investigating specific domains utilize the standardized measures listed below as indicated by the focus of the study; this is especially encouraged for intervention studies. If the investigator plans to assess a construct that overlaps with one or more of the recommended items, it is highly recommended that CCDE-recommended measures be used in the assessment. The investigator can include additional measures of the construct as desired.
